Tulsa Oklahoma Officer Killed in Shooting

The Tulsa Police Department is holding a press briefing to provide details on the shooting that killed a Tulsa officer. Deputy Chief Eric Dalgleish spoke to reporters during the briefing and gave an account of the events leading up to the shooting. He said that the suspect was armed with a gun and loaded magazine.

The shooting happened on June 29, 2020, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The officer who was shot and killed was Sgt. Aurash Zarkeshan, and Sergeant Craig Johnson, his backup. Police say that the suspect, David Ware, refused to step out of the car and reached under his seat to pull out a gun. When the officers tried to stop him, Ware opened fire, killing Sgt. Johnson and a Tulsa police officer.

While police continue their investigation, they do not have a motive for the shooting. The suspect is still in custody. The shooting took place around 3 a.m. in the Peoria and 51st street areas. The victim, 43, was found shot inside his car. The suspect pleaded not guilty to the charges filed against him.

According to police, the Tulsa Police Department received a call about an active shooter at a hospital, and officers responded. The gunman, who was between 35 and 40 years old, was found dead after suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Tulsa County jury deliberated for three hours before convicting David Ware, the Tulsa police officer who shot the suspect. The Tulsa County jury will now decide the sentence for Ware. Although Ware was convicted of first-degree murder, he was also convicted of two other crimes, including drug possession with intent to sell and possession of firearms. He was also found guilty of obstructing an officer.

Earlier on Wednesday, dozens of police cars gathered outside the Tulsa Hospital. Police shut down traffic outside the hospital and secured the area. Several officers were armed with guns and ran toward the hospital campus. First responders followed the sound of gunfire up to the second floor of the hospital’s Natalie Building.

In Oklahoma, this shooting marks the 233rd mass shooting of the year. According to the Gun Violence Archive, a mass shooting is defined as any incident in which four or more victims were killed. A gunman also killed 19 students and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, a mere 45 miles from Tulsa. The shooting of police officers in Texas, meanwhile, has put a national focus on the response time of law enforcement.
