After the success of Set, it was time for the Thompson Twins to broaden their musical horizons and shed their earlier squat sound. Producer Steve Lillywhite provided assistance as they evolved away from guitar-led funk towards something more pop orientated – Storm On The Sea and Who Can Stop The Rain providing melancholic highlights, while Hold Me Now as well as Lies and In The Name Of Love provided commercial appeal that gave the album its distinct sound. The resultant album became an international smash hit that included hit singles Storm On The Sea/Who Can Stop The Rain/Hold Me Now/US number 1 dance hits Lies/In The Name Of Love giving their record its commercial polish.

The album became a Top 5 hit in both countries and spent five weeks at number one on both lists, yet despite this critical acclaim the group struggled to adapt to stardom’s pressures – it wasn’t until 1985’s Close To The Bone that they truly began finding their feet as artists.

While some of the songs such as Into The Gap and I See You were somewhat disappointing, others such as Hold Me Now and The Things We Do For Love proved invaluable; especially The Things We Do For Love which served as a beautiful tribute to Currie’s late mother’s death.

As their star began to fade at the end of the decade, Bailey decided to change course and rebrand as Babble. His new project featured Chris Bell on drums and engineer Keith Fernley (who had helped craft their Feedback Max sound). Meanwhile Currie and Bailey continued playing together. Additionally they expanded into visual astronomy with Holiwater Band and sound system dub music through International Observer.
