Selena Quintanilla was known for paving a new path in Latin music with her unique blend of pop and latino fusion music, but she was also revered as a fashion icon, still emulated today by fans and other singers alike. From sparkly purple jumpsuits to her signature blinged-out bustiers, Selena made sure her fashion choices made headlines before, during, and even after her death 26 years ago – something Netflix’s new series continues today through iconic fashion moments that continue influencing style trends today!
Selena was known for her glittering stage outfits and casual daywear alike; for the 1994 cover of Mexican magazine Furia Musical she chose blue jeans paired with white button-down shirt and sheer black cover-up, complete with large pearl jewelry and studded boots – an eye-catching combination!
Selena Quintanilla found great joy in fashion when she launched her very own clothing boutique, Selena Etc. Managed by fan club president Yolanda Saldivar and bearing her name, the boutique offered pieces that celebrated both Mexican-American heritage as well as her personal sense of style.
Selena made headlines for wearing her silver-embellished Lillie Rubin halter dress at the 15th Annual Tejano Music Awards in 1992, where it garnered her four awards: Female Vocalist of the Year, Female Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year. Selena held on to it proudly until her death in 2016.
Quintanilla made headlines during her final television performance at the Astrodome Livestock Show and Rodeo in February 1995 with her wear of a boldly colored, sparkly jumpsuit featuring a halter top, flared pants, and long-sleeve jacket in vibrant colors – an outfit which became one of her most beloved fashion moments and influential moments ever. It became one of her most memorable fashion moments ever seen on screen.
Quintanilla proudly displayed her Texas roots when she donned a cowboy outfit for a photoshoot at La Villita Historic Village in San Antonio in 1992. She donned a black suede cowboy jacket teamed with ripped blue jeans and a brown hat embellished with silver studs for this photo shoot.
Quintanilla’s fans love when she wears body con outfits, but she was also capable of pulling off more casual looks such as this black skater dress with gold medallion earrings and a choker (similar to what Cardi B recently sported).
Selena was beloved ’90s icon known for her stunning beauty, making anything she wore appear effortless on screen. Thus when a man wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat was seen posing with Selena’s statue in Corpus Christi Cronica magazine by Joe Michael Perez who ran a local Trump memorabilia shop, many fans were outraged.
