Norm Nixon is one of the most recognizable and beloved former players in NBA history. A two-time All-Star, Norm played for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1980 to 1983 where he helped them win two championships and appear in another final.

He is renowned for his fierce defense and ability to make teams look good on offense. Throughout his career, he averaged 15.7 points and 2.6 rebounds per game, earning him selection as an All-NBA First Team selection in 1983 and 1985.

Norm Nixon played a significant role in the Lakers’ two trips to the NBA Finals (1980 and 1982). In 1980, he led them in scoring with 20.4 points per game; later that season he led their assists team and was selected for the All-NBA First Team.

He earned two-time All-Star status while with the Lakers, and was selected for the NBA All-Defensive Team in 1982. In 1984, he set an NBA record with 1,200 total assists – becoming its leading assist provider.

His formidable defense and ability to make a team look good offensively made him an ideal pick for the Lakers, as they needed a point guard to guide them to victory. He currently ranks number 10 all-time in assists per game and was an integral part of both titles won by the Lakers.

Though Norm Nixon is considered one of the top ten players in NBA history, he never made it into the Hall of Fame. Regardless, his contributions to Los Angeles Lakers basketball remain immeasurable and remain an invaluable part of their legacy today.

On October 11, 1955, Norm Nixon was born in Macon, Georgia and raised in Southwest. He attended Southwest High School before going on to play college basketball for Duquesne University.

He was an outstanding performer in both sports, earning All-State honors and receiving offers from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys.
