For the Giants’ home game on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs, the team will wear cream jerseys with a Pride patch on their right sleeve, along with black caps that feature a rainbow version of their iconic SF logo. The team says it’s a subtle nod to their commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community and that they hope this gesture will help change the negative perception of the LGBTQ+ community in sports.

The team has been supportive of the LGBTQ+ community for years, and its manager, Gabe Kapler, says that he’s proud of the Giants’ commitment to inclusivity and a welcoming atmosphere. The team is donating some of the proceeds from this game to the San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Celebration Committee.

A lot of teams have gotten involved with Pride Month, but the Giants’ move is especially significant because it comes at a time when many pro sports are taking steps to promote LGBTQ+ awareness. In a recent column for Outsports, Ken Schultz noted that 28 MLB teams have at least one Pride Night scheduled this month.

Despite these efforts, he says that Pride Month can still be difficult for people to feel comfortable attending games. For example, the Tampa Bay Rays recently faced criticism for not including a Pride patch on their game caps during a game against the Chicago White Sox.

While a uniform change isn’t easy to accomplish, it’s important that the players and coaches are fully involved. As a result, Kapler said that he expects full participation from the players going into this weekend’s game against the Cubs.
