Ric Flair and Sting 1978 NWA World Tag Team Championship Tournament

Ric Flair and the NWA have a long-standing rivalry. The relationship began in 1977. They fought many times during the 1978 World Tag Team Championship Tournament. Flair had won the title in 1975. However, he lost the title to Blackjack Mulligan in 1978. Flair wore his “Nature Boy” image to the ring, and became known for his figure four. Flair’s elbowdrop and toprope kneedrop won many of his early matches. He also defeated Paul Jones and Les Thatcher in the early 1980s, earning the NWA Mid Atlantic Television Championship.

Flair defeated Ricky Steamboat. Terry Funk attacked Flair and he was piled-rodded across the table. Ric Flair was out of action for several months, but he would return to win the NWA World Heavyweight title at the Great American Bash in July. Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes continued to feud in NWA. Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes at Starrcade’s main event, but Joe Frazier had to stop the match because of excessive bleeding. The promotion claimed that the winner would receive $1 million for the victory. After Ric Flair’s win, he wrestled for Jim Crockett’s Mid-Atlantic promotion, which would later merge with the World Championship Wrestling. Sting and Ric Flair were also involved with Nikita Koloff, and Ivan Koloff in feuds.
