’90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air left many viewers with fond memories. Perhaps one image stands out: Will Smith in a neon jumpsuit and wig spinning a basketball over his head as revenge against someone wronged him; or the scene where Carlton and Hilary dance to C+C Music Factory’s hit “Yo Home To Bel-Air.”
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air featured many talented performers such as Nia Long, Karyn Parsons, Daphne Maxwell Reid, James Avery and Tatyana Ali – as well as being a ratings success and groundbreaking at depicting an upper-class African-American family. Imani Perry wrote for The Root that The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air associated blackness with class which reinforced racial exceptionalism while creating separation between those living in inner cities and those who have managed to climb socio-economic ladders.
At a time when it was rare for black actors to assume leading roles on television series, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air broke ground by casting Will Banks (played by Will Smith) as Will Banks and was the first major television production featuring an entirely black cast; these performers, most under 25 themselves, brought their characters alive beautifully on screen.
This classic 90s show remains one of television history’s most beloved. Now reimagined with dramatic flair as simply Bel-Air on Peacock television network. Premiering April 30.
Tatyana Ali and Alfonso Ribeiro star as Carlton and Hilary Banks with Karyn Parsons as Karyn. Janet Hubert played Viviana; Daphne Maxwell Reid will take her place from season four and five reruns.
