Phylicia Rashad was born on June 19, 1948 in Houston, Texas. She is an award winning actress, voice actress and theatrical director. Her most famous role was on the television show, The Cosby Show, where she played the character of Clair Huxtable. However, she has also appeared in numerous films and on the stage.

After her time on The Cosby Show, Rashad went on to play the role of Ruth Lucas on the same television series from 1996 to 2000. She became the first African American to win a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play. In addition, she won the NAACP Image Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.

Phylicia Rashad has worked as an actress, voice actor, director and producer. She is currently the dean of the College of Fine Arts at Howard University. Since 2010, she has been dubbed “The Mother of the Black Community” at the annual NAACP Image Awards. During her career, she has been nominated for two Emmy Awards and won a Drama Desk award. Additionally, she was nominated for two Tony Awards.

Phylicia’s acting career began on the stage. She was a part of several stage productions such as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Raisin in the Sun. But she continued her work on the small screen, appearing on shows such as One Life to Live, This Is Us and Empire. Among her many stage credits are revivals of August Wilson’s works. Other productions include a television adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun, which she starred in as Lena Younger.

Phylicia also has a career in sports. She was the co-host of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with Bert Convy. She also had a role in the movie The Wiz, where she portrayed the Munchkin. Also, she played the boss of a surgeon with a personality disorder in Do No Harm.

Phylicia was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Howard University in 2010. She was awarded the NAACP Image Award for best actress in a comedy series for her role as Ruth Lucas on the television show, The Cosby.
