Traffic Delays Caused by Car Accidents in Scarborough Maine Today

Traffic delays on the Maine Turnpike have been caused by a multi-vehicle crash near mile 44 of Scarborough. Officials state an SUV rear-ended a pickup truck, which then hit another vehicle before another car tried to avoid the pileup by swerve swerving but ended up hitting one of those involved in the pileup instead.

Police are continuing their investigation of what caused this accident and asking drivers to reduce speed and remain alert.

A 19-year-old driver died when the silver Honda Accord he was driving left the roadway and struck a tree, according to reports by his mother. She believes he was on his way to attend a party with friends when his vehicle suddenly veered off course, striking the tree, and being declared dead on arrival at the scene. She flew from New Zealand to Australia in order to collect her son’s remains from authorities there.

On Thursday afternoon in Scarborough, one person was injured after a collision between a pickup truck and small car occurred at the intersection of Route 1 and Pleasant Hill Road. The driver of the small car sustained serious injuries in this crash and was transported to hospital; his identity has yet to be released pending notification of next of kin. A section of Route 1 was closed while police reconstructed this crash scene.

Another victim of fatal accidents was 63-year-old pilot who perished when the 14-foot skiff he was piloting collided with a 39-foot cabin cruiser near Littlejohn Island at about 6:30 p.m. Monday. A Coast Guard Auxiliary boat pulled him from the water before transporting him to a medical center nearby where he later succumbed to his injuries.

On Thursday afternoon, several Maine Medical Partners facilities in Scarborough were placed under lockdown after receiving reports that employees had received threats against their safety from anonymous individuals. Officials at 92 and 96 Campus Drive as well as 300 Professional Drive were informed that someone had made vaguely concerning statements pertaining to employee wellbeing – prompting a 90 minute lockdown period before it was lifted.
