Torajans in southern Sulawesi, Indonesia are well known for their elaborate funeral rituals. As Torajans do not view death as final, they perform elaborate funeral ceremonies to pay their respects to deceased loved ones who have left them. Some practices of Toraja can be disturbing for others but have become part of its culture – exhuming bodies of deceased to revive and preserve them for later use; building houses near graves; placing statues in honor of dead relatives etc… Though others may view these practices with dismay or disgust, Torajans embrace them wholeheartedly as part of its culture – while outsiders may view these practices with great respect as part of Torajan culture!
