It’s not a secret that the Illinois senator has a baby on her back. On April 9, she gave birth to a girl and is the first sitting senator to have a child. What about a working mother? She was born in Thailand. Her father was a United Nations worker, and her family lived on food stamps and almost became homeless. Her terrible experience inspired her to work harder to serve her country. Despite her difficulties, she was determined and inspired and even fought against her limitations. Her grueling recovery led her to join the U.S. military and became a helicopter pilot, one of the few jobs available for women at that time.

Duckworth’s biggest challenge was getting pregnant. She and her husband tried numerous methods to conceive a child, including using in-vitro fertilization. After the birth of her first child, she had a miscarriage. She did however get pregnant and had her second child. Her struggles to conceive were not over, however. Duckworth faced many difficulties during pregnancy, but her determination helped her achieve her dream.
