Julien Macdonald is one of the world’s most successful designers, and his show attracts celebrities who look stunning in his clothes. Notable clients include BeyoncA, Kylie Minogue and Christina Aguilera. However, Julien also produces affordable high street pieces under his Star label as well as recently launching a shoe range with Debenhams department store.

His star looks are versatile enough for women of all shapes and sizes to rock. This knack has been instilled in him by his parents, who always looked perfect when he was growing up.

His mother was a nurse, and Macdonald learned to knit from her. After earning a degree in textiles at Brighton, he went on to study at London’s Royal College of Art before being recruited by Karl Lagerfeld to design knitwear for both Chanel and his own label.

He became creative director at Givenchy in 2001, replacing Alexander McQueen and winning the British Designer of the Year award. His designs have become a must-see at fashion week shows around the world, while his collaborations have cemented his place beyond just trade press attention.

His penchant for glamour has often led him to controversy. His unrepentant use of real fur earned him and celebrity models Paris Hilton an angry letter from PETA; furthermore, his daring redesign of British Airways flight attendant uniforms sparked objections from the Transport and General Workers’ Unions.

This season, Macdonald took inspiration from the Kenyan plains of the Maasai Mara reserve. He translated its wild beauty into metallic and gold fringed and glittered pieces that revealed more than they concealed.

He paid homage to his heritage with a line of patent red, white and green bags featuring dragons and sparkling JM initials. Additionally, the designer has expanded the Star collection into activewear with performance sports vests and leggings in monochrome, rich metallic or multi-floral prints.

The brand is currently sold in department stores such as Debenhams and Topshop, with plans to open a Selfridges location soon. This marks an important milestone for the young designer who hopes to reach her target market of women who want to look good while out and about.

His style has allowed him to carve a unique niche in the fashion industry – he’s not afraid to dress women who don’t fit standard sizes. According to him, looking like a Hollywood movie star is key – whether you’re an air hostess, nurse or city lawyer.

“Glamour is my USP,” he states, noting that fashion serves to give people an image they want to project. Whether it be a Hollywood glamour queen or an urban lawyer, women who care about style want to be seen wearing something sparkly and glitzy.”
