Mary Wigman (Karoline Sophie Marie Wiegmann; 13 November 1886 – 18 September 1973), famous for her expressive dance, was one of the pioneers in German culture who pioneered expressive movement training without pointe shoes. Known for pioneering modern dance, dance therapy, and movement education in its current state after World War II, Wigman founded a West Berlin school and lectured throughout Germany and abroad after WWII – she even won both a Schiller Prize from Mannheim City Hall as well as being awarded Germany’s Great Cross of Merit after receiving both awards – before passing away and being laid to rest next to family grave next door to Wigmann family grave in Essen, Germany after spending her last days there
