Ric Flair and Sting 1978 NWA World Tag Team Championship Tournament

Ric Flair and the NWA have a long-standing rivalry. The relationship began in 1977. They fought many times during the 1978 World Tag Team Championship Tournament. Flair had won the title in 1975. However, he lost the title to Blackjack Mulligan in 1978. Flair wore his “Nature Boy” image to the ring, and became known for his figure four. Flair’s elbowdrop and toprope kneedrop won many of his early matches. He also defeated Paul Jones and Les Thatcher in the early 1980s, earning the NWA Mid Atlantic Television Championship.

Flair defeated Ricky Steamboat. Terry Funk attacked Flair and he was piled-rodded across the table. Ric Flair was out of action for several months, but he would return to win the NWA World Heavyweight title at the Great American Bash in July. Playboy Gary Hart was a big fan of Flair and helped Flair. In the end, Flair won the match by disqualification.

Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes continued to feud in NWA. Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes at Starrcade’s main event, but Joe Frazier had to stop the match because of excessive bleeding. The promotion claimed that the winner would receive $1 million for the victory. After Ric Flair’s win, he wrestled for Jim Crockett’s Mid-Atlantic promotion, which would later merge with the World Championship Wrestling. Sting and Ric Flair were also involved with Nikita Koloff, and Ivan Koloff in feuds.

The match is a classic. Ric Flair defeats the Undertaker and the Spirit Squad with a Sharpshooter. They then face the nWo. After the nWo members interfere, the Undertaker wins. The two then defend their World Tag Team titles. Ric Flair is unable to win a title match against Stone Cold Steve Austin. This match is considered the first great battle between two great American wrestlers.

The NWA World Heavyweight Championship was won by Ric Flair and Sting in a match on July 18, 1993. The match also featured Kevin Nash and Goldust, who defeated Bobby Eaton and The Equalizer.
