Beginning as early as 1770, Christmas tree farming has a rich and lengthy history dating back to early 1700s. By the Industrial Revolution, Christmas trees were becoming common in homes and public places throughout North America; several species such as Douglas Fir and Noble Fir were planted for sale to customers including these two which today remain among the most cultivated in this country.

Before recently, the Christmas tree industry consisted of numerous small tree farms scattered throughout the Pacific Northwest. But in the early 1950s, Crown Zellerbach Company started planting an immense quantity of noble fir trees on their large farm near Salem, Oregon.

Bob and Gary Bishop, owners of Douglas Fir Christmas Tree Company in Portland, were concerned that all these noble fir trees would quickly flood their traditional market in the Northwest region and threaten their entire industry. Luckily, they were able to spread out the new supply across a wide geographical area so as to prevent flooding existing markets with excessive supply.
