Ed Sheeran took the stage at London’s O2 Arena with only a guitar and a loop pedal, and he had the audience wrapped around his finger. He wore red plaid flannel and performed 17 songs with a one-man band.

He added a few extra layers of vocal harmonies and banged the drums to get the crowd to sing along, and his voice was the best part of the show. He was low key, but his powerful voice soared to the rafters of the O2 and filled the arena.

Sheeran and his Shape of You co-writers John McDaid and Steven McCutcheon won a copyright battle over the hit song on Wednesday. The singer and his writers had been accused of plagiarising a 2015 song by grime artist Sami Chokri. The judges ruled that the “Oh I” hook in Sheeran’s song was not a direct copy of the “Oh why” refrain from Chokri’s track, but that there were similarities between the two phrases.

Despite the court ruling, Sheeran said the case had been a “deeply traumatising” experience. The case had caused him and his co-writers “immense stress” as they tried to defend themselves against a plagiarism claim.

He and his writers defended themselves by explaining that they were often credited with the work of lesser known artists. They referred to their efforts as a collaboration and added Kandi Burruss, Tameka Cottle and Kevin Briggs as co-writers on the Shape of You track.

They also explained how the song used a simple minor pentatonic pattern that was “entirely commonplace” and used “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone and “No Diggity” by Blackstreet as examples of how they had been inspired by others.

The judge ruled that Sheeran and his co-writers were not guilty of plagiarism, saying they had “neither deliberately nor subconsciously” copied a phrase from Chokri’s 2015 song. While the court acknowledged there were “similarities” between the one-bar phrase, such similarities were only a “starting point” for a possible infringement.
