Internship at the Licking County Adult Probation Department
As soon as someone is sentenced to probation by a court, a probation officer is assigned by the judge to monitor compliance with its terms for an agreed-upon duration. These can include conditions such as reporting monthly, participating in treatment programs, maintaining employment and support for defendants during probationary period, community service hours, random urinalysis checks, curfew times and wearing GPS monitoring device among many others. Furthermore, probation officers often visit offenders both at their place of work and home and other relevant locations throughout their probationary term.
Judge Higgins noted the significance of probation officers to both the community and courts. To provide optimal supervision of offenders, Judge Higgins recommended equipping probation officers with all of the tools necessary for effective oversight – training can help them fulfill this responsibility more efficiently while meeting court mandates more efficiently.

As a response to the Kirkersville shootings, Licking County Municipal Court has taken measures to ensure their offenders’ safety. One such measure involves conducting lethality risk assessments on all domestic violence offenders eligible for early release from jail – this assessment will be performed by a probation officer prior to being released or at their probation intake appointment. Furthermore, domestic violence offenders will need to complete a counseling program prior to any early release and not possess weapons at home contact appointments; any found weapons will be confiscated immediately by probation.
