Katy Perry Blm

A new video for Katy Perry’s newest album, “Blank Label Music,” has sparked a firestorm of criticism. With her exaggerated red lips and triangle nose, as well as large blue eyes, the pop singer has been accused evoking blackface imagery. The shoes, made from black Nappa leather, have already caused a stir. The videos come on the heels of recent controversy surrounding Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and his attorney general, Mark Herring, who admitted to wearing blackface in the past.

Some internet users have called April Perry’s apology futile, calling it “futile.” April Reign, activist and editor-at-large at Nu Tribe Magazine, tweeted that Perry’s apology was not sufficient. Identity politics aim to divide people. These critics call Perry racist and are not fighting racism. They are creating a new racial division.

However, Katy Perry has been criticized for cultural appropriation in past music videos. Deray Mckesson, a Black Lives Matter activist, sat down with Perry in 2014 and admitted that she had adapted black culture. The singer’s ‘This Is How We Do’ video, which featured her with cornrows and eating watermelon, drew a great deal of criticism. After the controversy, Perry issued an apology and released her fifth album, Witness.
