Romesh Angunawela, an eye specialist in the UK, created the GIF. A baby’s eyes can’t focus on its face until three months of age.

The baby’s legs are long and his eyes are huge. This is a huge milestone because the baby can now see color, especially red. However, babies cannot process bright, bold colors until they are three months old. Pale shades of grey and brown don’t stimulate the brain nearly as much as bright red or black. It is during this stage that babies can fixate on other faces and smile for the first time.

In the late 90’s, a GIF of a dancing baby was first popularized. It was adapted from the 1987 cartoon “Dancing Baby” and circulated via email. It was later featured in a music video made by Charli XCX, Troye Sivan. It also made an appearance in an episode of the Amazing World of Gumball titled “The Web” during the song “Hashtag Trending.”
