Holli Wood Cool World Costume

Paramount Pictures used an unusual campaign strategy in an attempt to increase publicity for their PG-13 live action/animated Cool World television show: placing a 75-foot image of Kim Basinger’s cartoon character Holli Would on top of the Hollywood sign for one week. Residents protested this action by picketing its unveiling, even hiring a plane to fly over and display messages for Paramount Studios.

Cool World is an animated fantasy realm inhabited by cartoon characters with humanlike characteristics. It is ruled by its own version of law and order – in this case Nails the Spider leading his group known as Claws gangsters. Holli, an outcast who wishes for human companionship seduces convicted cartoonist Jack Deebs (Gabriel Byrne). Their adventures span both realms.

The film blends elements of conventional crime, comedy and science fiction stories with elements of satire and slapstick humor in an immersive cartoon-style environment reminiscent of Tex Avery cartoons. Holli’s quest to become human while maintaining her status as an imprisoned doodle complicates matters further.

Cool World characters infiltrate our everyday reality, altering people and places into wild cartoon caricatures while defying normal physics. Common scenes include battles between giant dinosaurs and Claws as well as chaotic street fights between Holli’s goons and police with pop guns who don’t shoot very accurately.

All Men Are Perverts: As the result of being seduced by Jack, Holli comes to believe that human experience encompasses sexual encounters; this contrasts with Frank Harris attempting to convince Jessica Rabbit he is not perverted in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Holli eventually makes her way to the rooftop of Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas and manages to retrieve “the spike,” which acts as a cork for Cool World and removes it. Once this has occurred, bizarre animated props and characters from Cool World begin pouring out into reality along with Toon Physics effects; additionally random people become transformed into hideous beasts or clownish figures! Adding further chaos, random real world people become transformed into hideous monsters or humorous clowns!
