Pirates Right-Hander Gus Culpo

Culpo has been recovering from an elbow injury for over a year. He finally made his first start last month, a mop-up appearance, against Santa Ana College. Since then, Culpo has been a major part of the Pirates’ turnaround. His impressive performance has sparked interest from other four-year programs.

Culpo began his college career five years ago as a sophomore at Orange Coast College. Prior to this, he played at Bishop Hendricken High School in Rhode Island, pitching as a right-handed pitcher. However, injuries hampered his prep career. He subsequently transferred to Worcester Academy in Worcester, MA.

Culpo had hoped to pitch in college, but his junior season was cut short due to a helicopter crash. Culpo’s heartbroken parents had urged him to transfer to USC. Although he missed his senior year, he remained dedicated to his new school. Despite his injuries, Culpo was able to improve his performance from last year.
