A Thrill at the Conneaut Lake Park Fall Festival

At festivals, there’s something thrilling for everyone at every festival imaginable, from pie-eating contests to rock and roll music – but few events beat seeing a truck crushed by a massive pumpkin! At one Pennsylvania festival known as Pumpkin Drop, people gathered to witness as an overgrown squash was lifted high into the air using a crane before being dropped onto an unlucky vehicle, crushing it outright! Notable activities at this festival beyond pumpkin dropping include a parade, cow milking contest and musical entertainment, food vendors, regional crafters as well as children’s games such as Tumble Bug and bumper cars on a midway with over 30 rides and games including Tumble Bug and bumper cars. Perhaps most excitingly however is the massive 1,000 pound pumpkin being hoisted high into the air by crane and then slowly released back down onto a vehicle below by crane before its eventual landing on its vehicle below. Hundreds of people line up both Saturday and Sunday afternoons to witness its arrival – it becomes quite an eventful spectacle indeed.

The history of the festival can be traced back to 1920 when it first started life as the Dreamland Ballroom and Bowling Alley. By 1928, however, it had been rechristened Conneaut Lake Park with amusements becoming its focus. Through the years, attractions like Tumble Bug and roller coaster Blue Streak were added. A large part of Hotel Conneaut was destroyed by fire during World War II; Elizabeth is said to still haunt this site today; in 1990s renovations transformed it into Hotel Conneaut and Camperland.
