BET Pays Tribute to Whitney Houston
BET is the nation’s leading provider of quality entertainment. The network reaches more than 90 million households across the U.S., the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to its live broadcasts, BET Networks offers on demand viewing through its channel. With the recent death of Whitney Houston, BET will pay tribute to her on Sunday, July 1, in a show aptly named the BET TRIBUTE TO WHITNEY HOUSTON.
This show was a nod to the star’s iconic music career, a celebration of her accomplishments and a salute to her family and fans. Several celebrities stepped on stage for the ceremony. The list of performers was long, with Beyonce, Kanye West and Jay Z in attendance. But one of the most touching performances was from Whitney Houston’s mother, Cissy. She performed the song “Bridge Over Troubled Water” in honor of her daughter. Her performance brought the audience to their feet and had many crying.
Another iconic performance was the medley of hits that Houston sang. Her songs include Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor” and her own “I Will Always Love You.” Many of these performances have become legendary in their own right, but she also rapped the names of employees and employees of employees, and was said to have been a mean-tempered star at times.
A number of other artists were honored during the ceremony. Rick Ross was also in attendance, but was muted because of his profanity. Valerie Simpson also paid tribute to her husband Nick Ashford. Other notable performances included a medley of Donna Summer hits from Chante Moore. There were also a few low points, including a tepid performance from Channing Lee.
While the show did not cover a large number of topics, it was certainly a well-rounded event. The network will air a special three-hour episode to commemorate the occasion on 106 & PARK. During the evening, the show also featured a homage to Aretha Franklin, who was unable to attend Houston’s homegoing service.
Among the honors bestowed upon Houston were the Billboard Music Awards, the Grammys and the American Music Awards. In a tribute to her accomplishments, she was also given an Icon Award. As a result of her storied career, she won numerous awards, including a Grammy for the song “I Will Always Love You” and an Academy Award for her work on the soundtrack for the movie “Prince of Egypt”.
Among the most memorable moments of the night were the speeches and performances. The best part was that the awards were not just for the entertainers. BET was proud to present awards to the likes of Cissy Houston, Angela Bassett, Dick Clark, Lela Rochon, Rodney King, and Hal Jackson. It is an honor to pay tribute to such an amazing talent, but it is a daunting task. Thankfully, it looks like the show will be a rousing success.
The best part about the event was that it was organized by the late Whitney Houston’s family, which meant the show had a lot of emotion in it. Some of the other stars who attended the show were Kanye West, Beyonce, Jay-Z and Mariah Carey.
