Anton Bell, Hampton Commonwealth’s Attorney, Is Getting His Hands Dirty
The Hampton Commonwealth’s Attorney, Anton Bell, has officially launched his re-election campaign. In addition to the standard spiels about public safety, the candidate has a number of initiatives that would make a good case study for the next generation of law enforcement officials.
Bell has long been a public safety advocate, including a stint as a member of the Peninsula Drug Task Force and a brief stint as special assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. A former prosecutor for the City of Hampton, Bell has also spent a considerable amount of time advocating on behalf of victims of crime. He is the first African-American to be elected to a high-ranking position in the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office. Whether Bell has the knack for being a community watchdog or not, he has made a name for himself as a hard-nosed prosecutor who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty.
Bell and his wife, Dawn Yvette Bishop, are active members of both the religious and civic communities of Hampton. They are active in youth ministries, such as the Hampton NAACP’s Celebration of Fathers event, and the local YMCA. As a result, they are well-versed in identifying and solving problems that plague many neighborhoods across the Hampton Roads. Additionally, Bell and his wife are the proud parents of an adorable young man named Anton Bell, Jr.
For those of you looking for the best way to spend your free time, Bell has been hosting a free weeklong law-related education program for the underserved in the summer. These programs are free to the participants and include a variety of fun and interesting educational activities. Several local organizations are involved, including the Exchange Club and the Hampton Police Department. Those in the know report that the program has been a success, with hundreds of students having fun while gaining an appreciation of law and the legal system.
Bell has also incorporated a number of innovations into his office, including a state-of-the-art video conferencing facility for meetings with the Office of the Attorney General and the Hampton Police Department. Additionally, Bell and his team have implemented new technologies in the form of mobile tablets, computers, and a database to streamline the administration of cases. To be fair, a lot of credit for this must go to Bell himself. It’s no wonder he is in the running for re-election. During his re-election campaign, Bell has promised to focus on improving public safety and the local court system.
Among the most notable accomplishments of the Hampton Commonwealth’s Attorney, Anton Bell has also taken the time to speak with his constituents and listen to their concerns. As a result, the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office has proactively addressed challenges related to crime and the criminal justice system, such as the recent passage of a law aimed at making it harder for marijuana offenders to commit crimes.
