Rene Russo was born in Burbank, California on February 17, 1954 to Italian and German-English-Irish ancestry. Her father, a sculptor and mechanic, abandoned her and her mother when she was two; Shirley – a barmaid and factory worker – raised her as a single parent.
At 17 years old, Russo began her modeling career. She started out in fashion magazines and then transitioned into commercials before transitioning into filmmaking.
Modeling gave her the chance to meet scouts and managers from International Creative Management, who helped her break into acting. Over time, she rose through the ranks, graced many magazine covers with her stunning looks.
In the 1990s, her filmography expanded and she became a symbol of strength for women everywhere. She appeared in Clint Eastwood’s In the Line of Fire, Dustin Hoffman’s Outbreak and Mel Gibson’s Ransom, among other roles.
In 1999, she was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in ‘The Thomas Crown Affair.’
Her first leading role was in ‘Sable,’ a TV series that ran from 1987 to 1989. She then appeared in films such as ‘Major League,’ ‘One Good Cop’ and ‘Mr. Destiny’ before returning to acting in 2011 for her role as Frigga, mother of Thor in Disney’s Marvel movie ‘Thor.’
Since 2011, she’s been back on the big screen, starring in several projects such as ‘Nightcrawler’ with Jake Gyllenhaal and ‘The Intern’ with Emily Blunt. For her role in ‘Nightcrawler’, which earned her an Academy nomination, and three more nods have followed since then.
In 1992, actress Kate Hudson married filmmaker Dan Gilroy and together they have a daughter named Rose. Since then their relationship has blossomed into something successful; they now reside in Brentwood, California.
When Russo isn’t on the set of her latest film, she enjoys spending quality time with her husband and daughter. Her husband is a screenwriter, so they often collaborate on projects together.
She enjoys watching documentaries about topics that interest her, partly due to her adolescent years when she dropped out of school and had “huge holes in [her] education.”
She loves documentaries on the history of different countries and other topics, which she enjoys watching as “memory joggers.” According to Buzzfeed News, documentaries have always been an important part of her life.
She loves reading books in her free time, both fiction and nonfiction – with a special interest in the latter.
